Critical development theory : contributions to a new paradigm /
In recent years there has been considerable rethinking of the whole concept of development, including a growing awareness of its gender, cultural and environmental dimensions, and the impact of globalization. 520 | |a In recent years there has been considerable rethinking of the whole concept of development, including a growing awareness of its gender, cultural and environmental dimensions, and the impact of globalization. The contributors to this volume seek to extend these debates to a more fundamental level. The opening essay by the late Vincent Tucker explores the nature of the crisis facing development as an intellectual and practical project and sets out the various alternatives which have emerged. Boaventura de Sousa Santos argues that, despite the difficulty of producing theory today, a postmodern critical theory which reconstructs the idea of emancipatory social transformation is one way forward. Ziauddin Sardar argues, however, for a more fundamental break with development as a Eurocentric concept - the urgent need being to find other ways of knowing and being which are not just mirrors of the West. Jan Nederveen Pieterse suggests that 'critical holism' could provide just such a non-Western approach to development
520 | |a "In recent years there has been a considerable rethinking of the whole concept of development, including a growing awareness of its gender, cultural and environmental dimensions, and the impact of globalisation. The contributors to this volume seek to extend these debates to a more fundamental level, tackling such issues as the crisis of development as an intellectual and practical project, the need for a break with development as a Eurocentric concept, and the viability of alternative, non-Western forms of development. This thoughtful volume by authors of quite diverse intellectual positions transcends those critiques of development which simply engage in a blanket dismissal of the whole enterprise. Instead they offer innovative ways of engaging with a reality that, despite globalisation, is very much still a dimension of our era."--Publisher description

520 | 8 | |a Bob Sutcliffe examines globalization as a not-so-new incarnation of long established structures of international capitalism. Richard Douthwaite argues that the global economy is largely running on autopilot, thereby imperilling any serious possibility of really sustainable development. Other contributions by Diane Perrons and Honor Fagan argue for new ways of integrating a critical political economy perspective with concerns for gender and cultural issues
