John and Nancy were first sold by Maria Cohen, a "free black woman" and enslaver of Eve to Levi Sheftall D'Lyon, a judge in Savannah, Georgia, for "five hundred dollars" on November 1, 1836. The bill of sale was marked by Maria Cohen and witnessed by Joseph Felt. The second bill of sale details D'Lyon's sale of Nancy and John to General James Hamilton for "five hundred dollars" (page 3). Signed by D'Lyon. A note in pencil at bottom of page reads: Jim Martin, the slave of U.S. pensioner W. Martin of Augusta, advanced the above purchasing of Nancy & John that he might own them being their father and had the tith made in Genl. Hamiltons name as his friend. Jim always held this tith deed. 29 Jany.,1863 made a copy for Nancy. Pencil note signed by R. Campbell
