|a A keen "insider" overview of California party politics during the 1884 presidential campaign. Written by a man eminently qualified, a stalwart of the Republican Party from its very beginning in California to his career in national politics as California Congressman and Senator. Aaron Augustus Sargent (1827-1887), born in Newburyport, Massachusetts, came to California in 1849. He took up journalism before being admitted to the bar in 1854. His political career began in 1852 "and from that time he seems to have been dominated by a consuming political ambition ... He was active in the organization of the Republican party in California." Sargent served in Congress, 1861-1863, where he co-authored the first Pacific Railroad bill. He represented California in the U.S. Senate, 1873-1879; in 1878, at the request of Susan B. Anthony, he introduced what would later become the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. This letter was written soon after his resignation as ambassador to Germany. Returning to California, he ran again as Republican candidate for the Senate. His reelection was all but assured. "The Republican legislative caucus, however, unexpectedly nominated Leland Stanford ... Stanford and Sargent had been close friends and this apparent treachery came as a blow from which the latter never recovered ... Sargent was a man of strong and forceful personality, aggressive in political contests, untiring and persevering in his ends." Having just returned from Germany, Sargent lost no time in sizing up the California political scene. In this letter he hones in on the "divisions & factions of the Democratic party in California, Mr. Blaine's strength," and more, as B.F. Jones notes in his docket. As chairman of the RNC, Jones was responsible for Blaine's campaign. [From dealer description]
