Summary:Discusses the 8 tapestries designed by Charles Le Brun for Louis XIV, depicting the 4 seasons and the 4 elements. Each tapestry featured a decorative border with a symbolic emblem in each corner. In 1664 or 1665 the 32 emblems were reproduced by the miniaturist J. Bailly as descriptive plates painted in gouache on vellum. Each plate explained the symbolism of the emblem, with an added verse by Charles Perrault, Marc-Antoine Charpentier, Jacques de Cassagnes, and Jean Chapelin. The plates were later published as a book of engravings in 1670
