Summary: | Nicholas Winton played a key role in the rescue of Jewish children from Czechoslovakia in 1939. Pt. 1 (pp. 1-55), written by Emanuel, presents Winton's biography. Pt. 2 (pp. 57-192), written by Gissing (who was saved by Winton), describes the rescue operation and the fate of some of the children. Winton was born in London in 1909 to a family of German Jewish origin, Wertheim (they changed their name in 1938). In December 1938 an emissary of the British Committee for Refugees from Czechoslovakia invited him to take part in the rescue of Jewish refugees from the Sudetenland. When Winton arrived in Prague and realized that the rest of the Czech Lands would be occupied as well, he organized the transport of children in jeopardy to Great Britain. During March-August 1939, Winton managed to transport 669 children, mainly Jewish, in eight trains, thus saving their lives. Winton's story came to light only in 1988; in 1998 he received an award from the Czech government |
