An Evaluation of Environment-Enhanced Fatigue Crack Growth Rate Testing as an Accelerated Static Load Corrosion Test /

Room-temperature hydrogen sulfide gas (446 kPa [50 psig]) fatigue crack growth rate data were developed for an AISI 4340 steel heat treated to strength levels ranging from 634 to 1289 MPa (92 to 187 ksi). These data were compared with KIscc corrosion threshold data for the same steels in an attempt...

These data were compared with KIscc corrosion threshold data for the same steels in an attempt to establish a correlation between relatively short-time, corrosion-fatigue crack growth rate test results and long-time static-load KIscc data. Results show that corrosion-fatigue crack growth data can be used to rank the overall crack body corrosion susceptibility of AISI 4340 steel. However, a quantitative correlation does not exist with long-time KIscc threshold behavior. Recommendations for further work required to characterize the interaction between corrosion-fatigue crack growth and KIscc threshold behavior are discussed
