Description
Summary:Black-and-white photographic and photomechanical prints collected over a period of 100 years from many different sources for the study and teaching of the history of painting and drawing at Harvard University and its art museums. This part of the Core photograph collection of the Fine Arts Library documents painting and drawing of the Western world with an emphasis on Italian and Spanish artists of the Renaissance and Baroque periods; and to a lesser extent, the Flemish, Dutch, and German painters of this time. Other important groups of images cover Byzantine and early Christian art of the Middle Ages; Romanesque and Gothic frescoes; French masters of Romanticism and Impressionism; the post-Impressionists; English and American landscape painters; and major modern artists such as Matisse and Picasso. Images show oil paintings, watercolors, pastels, ink and pencil drawings, and other media in major art museums and galleries throughout Europe and the United States representing the work of nearly 3,000 artists
