Description
Summary:Memoirs of a Holocaust survivor from Iasi (1922-1993) who was arrested by the Romanians on 13 September 1940, arbitrarily accused of being a communist, together with many other Jews, and detained in military and civil prisons (in Iasi, Galati, Caransebes, and Bucharest) until September 1942, when he was transferred to the Vapnyarka camp in Transnistria. In March 1944, during the Nazis' retreat from the Ukraine, the camp was evacuated and many prisoners were executed by Romanian and SS units. One group, including the author, was transferred to the Targu Jiu detention camp in Romania and liberated in August 1944. Simon then emigrated to Israel. Many prisoners at Vapnyarka were poisoned and died, or became debilitated for life, by the animal fodder supplied them as food. Survivors have been helped by a German relief organization - "Hilfswerke Wapniarka" - which decided to support the invalids despite the public dispute in Germany regarding the Germans' share of the blame for the atrocities committed there. Includes an introduction (pp. 9-11) by Charlotte Petersen, one of the founders of "Hilfswerke Wapniarka", and an article by Hans Dieter Heilmann (pp. 109-125) regarding the involvement of Nazi Germany in the persecution of Jews by the Romanian government during World War II
