Summary: | In the present work, following items were studied on cold drawn uranium rods which had been [beta]-treated: 1) Relation between the thermal expansion coefficients in the drawing direction and the degree of working (2 ~ 30 pct reductions of area); 2) Effects of grain growth on the thermal expansion coefficients; 3) Thermal cycling growths of recrystallized rods. From the above, the author tried to obtain what degree of working was allowable before the effect of the preferred orientation appeared, and also to observe the development of the preferred orientation by the measurement of the thermal expansion coefficients. Following results were obtained: 1) Preferred orientations were found in only two per cent reductions, and the dimensional instability was apparent in thermal cycling; 2) {010} poles are arranged near the rod axis as a component of preferred orientations, regardless of the degree of working; (3) Grain growth after recrystallization affects thermal expansion coefficients |
