"This monograph tells the story of the explosive growth of university-business partnerships during the 1980s. The story begins in the early part of the twentieth century when such partnerships began to emerge. It continues with an account of how recent studies in biotechnology fueled desires for income by both parties and how government encouraged this goal by passing legislation that made university-business partnerships administratively easier and more likely to bear fruit. In the 1980s government aid for education decreased sharply and some university officials sought to soften the blow by entering into partnerships with business. ...The most pressing question about these partnerships is whether greater involvement with business will make higher education better or worse. Thus this monograph concludes with an extensive evaluation of the costs and benefits business partnerships bring to American higher education."--Introd
