From Shylock's ducats to the lovers' wedding bands to the heavenly spheres in their musical harmony, the circle is the play's most conspicuously varied figure. The major actions of the play reflect the circular imagery of its parts. Three delicately interconnected episodes form a series of dramatic paradoxes, in each of which an apparently interconnected episodes form a series of dramatic paradoxes, in each of which an apparently insoluble dilemma is resolved as the opposing ends join in a ring of harmony. The play's contrasting pairs-- law/freedom, justice/mercy, friendship/marriage, the old/the new, Jew/Christian, Venice/Belmont-- interlocked into a concordant whole. The means by which Shakespeare achieved this wholeness is a subject of close attention here. Taking into account Elizabethan attitudes on Christian doctrine, Jews and Gentiles, money lenders and merchants, and giving consideration to the dramatic and linguistic traditions within which Shakespeare worked, Danson treads a convincing middle way between the romantic sentimentalizers of the play and the hard-headed but reductive historical school." -Publisher | ||
