"For most of the Church's history, authority has been understood in legalistic and juridical terms and been seen as the power to rule. But this approach is false, dangerous, and not at all at the heart of Catholicism. Author Monica Migliorino Miller articulates a theology that breaks open the essence of ecclesial authority. Authority, if it is authority at all, derives from and exists for authentic Christian worship, namely, the Holy Eucharist." "The Catholic Church doctrinally teaches that women cannot be priests. The common assumption then is that women are without authority and that they are, in fact, deprived of proper office and leadership. But, if authority is derived from Eucharistic worship, then authority is fundamentally the authority of a covenant. This book shows that this covenant is spoken according to a primordial sexual language rooted in creation itself. This sexual language is the marital order of sexual persons, male and female, which forms the basis of the covenant of Christ's salvation." "Ecclesial authority has to do with sacramentally speaking the covenant in the world so that the world may have communicated to it the love of God and knows its own response to this God. The question, which is so troubling to the world and the Church, is: What is the language of the woman in this covenant? The authority of the covenant means that there must be a voice constitutive of redemption that is not God's. This is the voice of the Church, creation, nature, and mankind, and it is the voice of the woman in the head/body relation."
